Hand, Wrist & Elbow

Overview

The upper extremity includes the hand, finger, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. These areas can present with pain, tenderness, swelling, numbness, tingling, decreased flexibility or strength, stiffness, bruising and deformity. Symptoms can occur suddenly due to trauma or can progress gradually, due to repetitive stress, overuse, or disease.  The problem can be constant or intermittent in nature. Regardless of the cause, damage to the ligaments, tendons, soft tissue, muscles, joints and bones of the upper extremity can result in mild to serious disruption of your work, recreational activities, and everyday tasks causing your quality of life to suffer.

Depending on the problem, upper extremity injuries can be treated non-surgically or surgically. Non-surgical options include physical therapy, draining, medical devices, stretching, rest, ice, compression, elevation, medication (anti-inflammatories, pain relievers), injections (corticosteroid, Xiaflex), activity modification, and immobilization (compressive straps, bracing, splinting, casting). Often times these modalities are extremely effective.

Our Personalized and Patient-Centered Approach

At Orthopaedic Associates, we tailor each treatment plan individually based on a comprehensive understanding of your personal goals.  Our team understand that a significant number of upper extremity injuries can recover and heal through non-operative treatments. In the situation of a traumatic injuries or failure of conservative treatment measures, our specialists will engage in a shared decision-making process regarding surgical intervention. Many can be done right in our office operating room, which is substantially more convenient, efficient, and cost effective than an ambulatory or hospital setting.  Regardless of the treatment course, our focus is getting you back pain-free activity so you can continue enjoying life.
